Internal Linking

 Optimisation of the URL

Rewriting URLs allows you to provide Google with links containing keywords which are relevant to your page, understandable and help to interpret and analyse the content of the page.

Example:
- URL before rewriting: http://www.actinic.co.uk/Help/PBCPPlayer.asp?ID=1135973

- URL after rewriting: http://www.actinic.co.uk/actinic-cloud-computing.html

Here are some rules to respect to create good rewritten URLs:
  • Insert keywords in the URL (2-3 maximum).
  • Separate words with a dash (-) and not by an underscore (_).
  • Replace single quotes with dashes (-) or leave them out.
  • Create a single URL per page.
  • Once you have set it up, avoid changing your rewritten URL.
ATTENTION:
1/ Do not rewrite the URL for your home page. It is not helpful either to rewrite all the URLs for your site. Like with the <strong> tag, the goal should be to only rewrite the URLs of the most relevant, important pages of your site.

2/ Consider using these URLs in the site and develop a good amount of internal links. This helps navigation and optimises your pages. The most important link is the one that sends to your home page with the URL: http://www.mysite.com.

 Optimisation of the Anchor

You can create internal links so that you link from one page of your website to another. Anchor text is the title of a link that you click to be redirected to the destination page.

The anchor text must give clear information as to the content of the landing page. Do not put too many links (200 maximum) on your most important pages (home page, topic pages, etc.). The more links you have, the more diluted the importance of each link becomes. With fewer links you give each link more prominence.

Example:

In the back office, you would create the link on the anchor text:
<a href="http://www.actinic.co.uk/ecommerce-features-dataplug.html">Actinic DataPlug</a>

On the live site, only the anchor text “Actinic DataPlug” will be visible and will redirect visitors to the relevant destination page:
http://www.actinic.co.uk/ecommerce-features-dataplug.html
